It is a big sandstone rock and it is found in central Australia near Alice Springs. It is 348 meters high and its circumference is 9.4 kilometres.
The local aboriginals call it Uluru , however on 19 July 1873, William Gosse saw it and named it Ayers Rock in honour of Sir Henry Ayers who was the Chief Secretary of South Australia at the time. Going to Uluru and climbing it is a popular thing for tourists to do. However, continuing to let tourists climb Uluru has been very controversial and in 2009 the Australian government said that climbing Uluru is no longer allowed under the "Draft Management Plan 2009–2019". The public has been asked to comment on the plan before it gets submitted to the Minister for the Environment., however for now tourists are still allowed to climb it.
